Having empathy is a sign of high emotional intelligence and actually takes practice.

Below you’ll find some phrases to help you master being there for someone.

Besides being experienced as a loving, kind human, empathy impacts many aspects of your life.

So what’s in it for you long term?

As a matter of fact it’s associated with higher salaries, higher grade point average and a higher degree of happiness.

So with that said, here are some words you can use when someone you love is expressing deeply vulnerable and sometimes painful information, that allows you to be empathetic to their feelings.

Being empathetic for someone sounds like this:

“I believe you.”

“That sounds so hard.”

“You have the right to be upset.”

“I’m sorry you’re going through this.”

“Thank you for trusting me with this.”

“Wow, this must be so hard to talk about.”

“What is the best way I can support you?”

“What I love and admire about you in this moment is _______.”

This empathic communication just takes practice. Put a few phrases on a post-it note to remind yourself to say them.

You’ll find your relationships deepening in intimacy and joy♥

Go love up your family and friends. They’re lucky to have you in their lives.

Joy,
Dr. Shawne
