Halloween has been celebrated for thousands of years. Some say it can be traced back to the Celts and ancient Pagan festivals.
Some claim it originated in Ireland when a flood of Irish Immigrants fled from the potato famine in the mid-1800s, bringing the tradition of Halloween with them.
The history is not exact though we did find some fun and interesting facts that you may have not known about Halloween.
– The first Halloween parade happened in Anoka, Minnesota back in 1920.
– 4 in 10 Americans believe in ghosts.
– The vast majority of pumpkins are produced in Morton, Illinois, at the Libby’s Pumpkin canning plant. That accounts for 75% of the US canned pumpkin.
– “Monster Mash” the Halloween hit by Bobby “Boris” Pickett, was a novelty song back in 1962. It’s been a yearly Halloween hit many times since 1973. The song has generated more than $1 million in royalties.
– Orange and Black are the colors of Halloween, based upon what the Celts believed. Black symbolized the death of summer and orange symbolized the fall harvest.
– Bats are an official animal of Halloween. They are the only mammals that can fly and save billions of dollars by preventing pests from destroying crops.
– One in five adults pretend they are not home on Halloween.
– The first recorded night of trick-or-treating began in 1939.
– Before we carved pumpkins, we used to carve turnips!
– Pumpkins are a fruit.
– More than $12 billion in revenue is spent on Halloween across the US.
– The average American spends about $110 per person on costumes.
– In 2023, these were the top 5 costumes: Barbie, Princess, Spider-Man, Witch, and Fairy.
– More than 45 million kids between the ages of 5 and 14 years old will be trick-or-treating on Halloween night across the US.
– Halloween postcards used to be a thing. From 1905-1920, people sent postcards to celebrate Halloween.
– Candy corn used to be called “Chicken Feed.” It became popular in the late 1800s. It became a Halloween staple in the 1950s.
– The three most popular Halloween treats are M&Ms, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Kit Kats.
– And finally? If you see a spider on Halloween, it’s believed to be the spirit of a deceased loved one who is watching over you.
